I’m glad I live in the 21st Century where I can take advantage of modern amenities like air conditioning and the Internet. And not have leeches put on my body as a medical treatment.
But soon we may actually prefer a leech like method of extracting blood. At least if we’re squeamish around needles. As a new method could do away with our prickly friend.
Interesting Engineering explains:
“A new device will soon aid those who fear huge needles penetrating parts of their body…[as] scientists have developed an innovation that draws blood samples by employing microneedles and a suction cup instead of a large needle. This invention has been inspired by the principle of leeches.
Since many individuals feel discomfort at the sight of needles penetrating their arms for blood sample requirements, doctors often end up resorting to areas such as a prick to the fingertip or earlobe for blood.
However, the drawback of this approach does not supply enough blood for diagnostic testing.
Therefore, this new device proposes a solution for accurate blood sampling that works as per the leech principle. It’s a less invasive approach than a needle and easy to handle.
Researchers at ETH Zurich who devised the device say it can be used by people without medical training.”
The fact this this method is easy to use and works better than a finger prick means that it could catch on. You know, if people could get over the whole association with leeches thing.
Is a leech-like device for drawing blood the Greatest Idea Ever?
