Apple finally took the plunge at their annual developer’s conference yesterday announcing vast AI integration across theire suite of products. This includes empowering Siri, entering into a partnerswhip with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT, and blowing everyone’s minds with their new calculator app for iPad. Here’s a look at their best AI announcements from WWDC 2024:
Apple Intelligence: Let’s start off with the big news of the day. Apple Intelligence is Apple’s take on AI or more accurately their take over of AI, including their attempt to rebrand AI itself from Artificial Intelligence to Apple Intelligence. This includes supercharging Siri.
CNN sums it up best:
“Apple is embracing generative AI – the buzzy form of artificial intelligence that can provide thoughtful and thorough responses to questions – through Siri, the company’s virtual assistant with a hit-or-miss track record, essentially turning it into an iPhone chatbot.
This could enable Siri to perform specific tasks such as recalling a picture taken years ago on the device or answering detailed questions about the weather, the news or trivia. It can also perform more advanced tasks, such as answering when a user’s mom’s plane is landing, by analyzing information previously sent in an email. Over time, it could learn the user’s preferences and respond accordingly.
This is not unlike what some competitors have already introduced in generative tools. Siri will also likely adapt automatically and seamlessly to users, based on voice, audio and natural language, along with images and contextual cues.
Users will also be able to create personalized photos, such as taking a picture of your mom and making it into a stylized, cartoon-y version, adding a superhero cape. It can take action across apps, including asking the software to pull up all photos of a family member, and retrieve and analyze data from across your apps, such as factoring in what’s on your screen like email or a calendar.
If a meeting is being rescheduled, Apple Intelligence can process relevant personal data and see the email your kid sent days before about a recital, alerting users if there may be a conflict.”

ChatGPT Integration: The big news of the day goes hand in hand with another big announcement: ChatGPT is coming to Apple. For free.
As The Verge puts it:
“Apple is partnering with OpenAI to put ChatGPT into Siri, the company announced at its WWDC 2024 keynote on Monday.
ChatGPT will be available for free in iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia later this year without an account, and Apple says that user queries won’t be logged. The popular chatbot will also be integrated into Apple’s systemwide writing tools. In addition, paid ChatGPT subscribers will be able to link their accounts to access premium features from OpenAI within Apple’s operating systems.”
This is for convenient for anyone who is a current ChatGPT user and will enable millions of other people who haven’t used it yet to start. A win-win for everyone involved. Unless you’re Elon Musk and don’t trust it and decide to now ban Apple devices from your organizations.
Calculator App for iPad: But the biggest buzz of the day may have belonged to the calculator app coming to iPad. Many people were looking forward to this (waiting 14 years for iPad to finally get a calculator app)….
and then the demo blew everyone’s minds as it can solve equations that you write down and generate adjustable graphs for you among other cool features:
Math homework will never be the same again.
Genmoji – Now you can use AI to custom generate any emoji that you want. This solves for a problem I’ve recently encountered: not being able to quickly find the emoji you want. Instead of scrolling aimlessly now you can just create anything you’d want by typing it out. Of all the new little features that incorporating Generative AI into iOS allows for this is one that I can see people using the most. Along with automatically generating AI driven pictures within iMessage itself based on what you’re talking about.
Engadget explains:
“Currently, Unicode 15.1 supports just shy of 3,800 various emoji. But for everyone out there that for some reason thinks that’s not nearly enough, today at WWDC 2024, Apple announced the ability to use AI to generate unique emoji based on your prompts.
Called Genmoji, which looks to be an awful portmanteu of the words ‘generate’ and ’emoji,’ these new creations are powered by Apple Intelligence, which is a new collection of AI features coming to the iPhone, iPad and Mac sometime later this year. Similar to creating images with services like Midjourney and Dall-E, users will be able to whip up custom emoji by inputting specific prompts. Once made, they can be shared with others as stickers, reactions in a Tapback or simply embedded in-line in messages.”

All in all, it was a historic day for AI and for Apple as Apple Intelligence got rolled out. For many people using these features on their iPhone and IPad will be their first AI experiences thereby officially bringing AI into the mainstream. It signals that AI is here to stay and ushers in a new era in which AI quickly gets integrated into everything. If you thought the pace of AI was already staggering you ain’t seen nothing yet.
